Report against Deshabandu

Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Western Provinces Deshbandu Tennakoon has been accused of giving an illegal order to the Fort Police Station OIC regarding the amount of 17,850,000 rupees found in the President’s House by the July 9th protesters.

Inspector General of Police C. D. Wickramaratne has forwarded a report to the Secretary of the Ministry of Public Security and submitted the preliminary investigation report conducted by the Police Special Investigation Unit along with the charge sheets.

The Fort Magistrate’s Court had issued an order to conduct an investigation into the incident related to the handing over of the money found in the Presidential Palace to the on July 9, 2022.

Regarding the incident, in addition to Mr. Deshbandu Tennakoon, Assistant Superintendent of Police in charge of Colombo Central District II K. it. e. Nalin Dilruk has also been charged.

It is related to the lack of supervision to take legal action regarding the money handed over to the Fort Police Station.

Colombo Central Division Crime Investigation Bureau Station Commander Chief Inspector Perera has also been charged by this investigation committee.

There were reports that Deshabandu Thennakon will be appointed as the next IGP in the background of such allegations against the Senior DIG in charge of Western Provinces Mr. Deshbandu Tennakoon.

The media had reported that President Ranil Wickramasinghe has decided to submit Deshabandu Tennakoon’s name as the next Inspector General of Police.

The Inspector General of Sri Lanka is appointed by the president, but has to be aproved by Legislative Assembly.

Such media reports had been published without any basis at a time when the Constituent Assembly had not met to take such a decision. Council meeting sheduled in next tuesday.
